Mercy Heights Nursery in Guam

Detailed Information

Responding to the need of working mothers for childcare services on Guam, the Sisters of Mercy established Mercy Heights Nursery and Kindergarten (MHNK) at what is now the site of Guam Memorial Hospital.

In 1975, with the opening of the Catholic Medical Center of the Marianas, the nursery moved to its present location at the Mercy Heights Convent complex. With its steady enrollment increase since 1960, MHNK launched an expansion program in 1984 and has provided additional classrooms, office, kitchen, teachers’ lounge and bathrooms.

Through the Sisters’ effective administrative leadership in collaboration with committed lay employees and supportive parents, the expansion was completed in 1992. A sponsored ministry of the Sisters of Mercy, Mercy Heights Nursery and Kindergarten was officially incorporated in 1997, with the Leadership Team of the Community serving as Members of the Corporation.

On December 12, 2004, a state-of-the-arts multipurpose structure, was dedicated honoring Sister Roberta Taitano, whose dream for the children became a reality, twelve months after her death. Sister Roberta Center now provides the children with a beautiful, safe space for indoor play as well as excellent venue for community meetings, graduation ceremonies, musical productions, faculty party, musical concerts, and dance performances.

Currently under the leadership of a lay administrator, the faith community of Mercy Heights Nursery and Kindergarten continues to offer excellent care and educational curriculum for preschool and kindergarten children.
